And poof, it's gone.

Egads, this summer was fast. And I spent lots of long days in the car, courtesy of the horrible circumstance that my sister and her husband and their two goofs are moving away. Away-er than they already lived, which was about six hours. Now? To the other side of the ocean, people.

I am sad. One reason that Chris and I decided to move back to the east coast was to be closer to our families. Especially the goofs.

This little boy.

                                                     And this little girl.

They stimulate all of the emotions - love, awe, fear, frustration, and nearly endless amusement. Over the last year or so I have gotten to watch them grow and change, one learning how to walk and talk and the other growing into a charming, intelligent little scoundrel. We said goodbye on Monday, after a long weekend of swimming and singing and dancing.

On Monday, as we were driving from my mom's house back into town, my mom and I were in the car with the goofs, singing all sorts of songs, from lullabies to camp classics:  "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and the like. Somewhere along the line, the boy piped up that he'd had made his own song, and he wanted us to sing it with him. "How does it go?" we asked. He sang:

Ice cream sandwiches,
Ice cream sandwiches,
Ice cream sandwiches,
One of them runs away

Doesn't make any sense, but hey, he's five. We joined in, singing several rounds of the simple tune. Then we tried adding another verse, in which the second ice cream sandwich of the group melts away, but the boy pronounced that it was too hard to learn that one, so we just stuck with the original.

After getting into town, we all had a few more hours to hang out and look at each other morosely. Then Chris and I decided we needed to hit the road so we could get some sleep before work the next day. We said our goodbyes, huggged tightly and cried openly (well, I did, anyway) and then got in the car to head home. And in between songs on the radio and the hum of the tires, I kept hearing in the back of my mind, "Ice cream sandwiches, ice cream sandwiches, ice cream sandwiches, one of them runs away..." It's my new favorite song.

  1. I believe the actual word the boy used was "difficult" not hard!
